1. Africa's largest copper smelter officially commenced production. Ivanhoe Mining's Camora-Kakula smelter will produce 500,000 tons of 99.7% pure copper anodes annually. Ivanhoe Mining is a Canadian mining company whose main businesses are the Camora-Kakula copper complex and the Kipsi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as platinum-palladium-nickel-rhodium-gold-copper mines in South Africa. It also explores for new sedimentary copper deposits in Angola, Kazakhstan, and Zambia.
2. Angola's NGC natural gas processing plant in Soyo officially began operation, processing 400 million cubic feet of natural gas and 20,000 barrels of condensate per day for the Kiluma and Maboca gas fields. The gas field has proven reserves of 1 trillion cubic feet. The project is jointly operated by Angola Energy Company, Eni Group, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, Angola National Oil Company, and Total Energy, with a total investment of US$4 billion.
3. The Baomahon gold mine project in Sierra Leone secured $330 million in joint debt financing from the African Finance Corporation and the African Export-Import Bank. Led by Boxmore Gold and the African Minerals & Metals Processing Platform, the project is expected to contribute 10% to Sierra Leone's GDP.
4. The UK government has withdrawn its export credit agency's support for Total Energy's controversial $20 billion liquefied natural gas development project in Mozambique, after previously guaranteeing $1.15 billion for the project.
5. China's total investment in African mining in 2024 is estimated at approximately $3.37 billion, primarily in South Africa, Mozambique, Niger, Algeria, and Mauritius. Currently, about 77% of Africa's mineral raw materials are exported and processed in China.
6. Jumia, Africa's largest e-commerce platform, has its supply chain heavily reliant on Chinese manufacturing, with 64.71% of its internationally sourced goods originating from China. Its platform boasts 24,000 Chinese sellers.
7. Over the past seven years, Canada has invested more than $30 million in Ghana's technical and vocational education sectors for youth skills development. Since Ghana's independence, Canada's cumulative aid has reached $2.5 billion. Canada's mining assets in Ghana are currently valued at $1.1 billion, and bilateral trade amounted to $483 million.
8. Russia will donate Su-30 and Su-35 fighter jets to Sudan in exchange for access to a Red Sea base.
9. The African Development Bank is recruiting consultants, independent transport industry consultants for Rwanda, and local assessment consultants for Madagascar, among others.
